Was racking my brains trying to figure out why I only had 1st - 3rd gear, no 4th? LOL...yeah, that's the thing with some cars, especially older ones. Not all of them were 4 speeds. Did you know that a Whelen Modified is a 3 speed, but only uses 2 gears? They put the three speed transmission in it, but take one gear out, since they mostly run short tracks with it. SO even though its a 3 speed transmission, its only got high and low gear due to the removed gear. Back when they ran road courses like Watkins Glen and Lime Rock, they'd put a 4 speed transmission in, then take one gear out to make it have only 3 gears. That way they had a low gear, high gear and overdrive (technically speaking) which made it better for road racing with those types of cars. And of course nowadays you see Corvettes and Camaros that may come with the 6 speed transmissions. But when it comes to NASCAR, the majority of them besides the modifieds are running the usual 4 speed, but Indycars and many road racing cars will use more gears (like 5 and 6 speeds)...but if you were to get into a dirt late model, it may only have 2 gears... and a sprint car like World of Outlaws may only have one gear (which is why you see them having to be pushed off to get them started) So going from car to car, you guys may want to remember that many types of racecars will have different transmissions and gearing and can vastly affect setups... since naturally a 3 speed setup is going to be different than a 4 speed setup.

I posted the following in the wrong thread so I copied the topic and conversation to the right one cruisectrl: "Was racking my brains trying to figure out why I only had 1st - 3rd gear, no 4th? Even re-installed patches Then decided to read the Readmes LOL! In fact everyone should read, Ron gives some very good tips on driving these Turns out there was nothing wrong with the car,, the kurtis has a 3 speed tranny, ferrari and mercedes 4, maserati 5, " Today at 3:43am, cruisectrl wrote: Was racking my brains trying to figure out why I only had 1st - 3rd gear, no 4th? actually the kurtis only had a 2 speed but it was hopeless at road racing with that. Also the brakes are weak on all cars 4 inch wide tires of hard rubber. and using the tranny to help slow up is necessary different style of racing.
