in computing there are basically 3 major organizations that accredit a person with having P.C. support/repairing skill. Microsoft is de facto in software for the most part, adobe being a minor exception. cisco is de facto in upper end server systems and is wholly proprietory. comptia is group of computer hardware vendor coming together (ms & cisco included) and offering certification in many tracks of computing: A+ is basic computer repair cert- a801 hardware a802 software N+ is network support and the exam is n10-005 this year.
i feel so good to haved both this year. my next move is vmware cert and some sort of MS web design, hopefully by mid 2014(no promises), and of course i'll have to attempt the docorate of ethernet- cisco.
personally i know the market isnt as hot as it was in 1998 but it isnt dead. wireless is evidence of this.

Good job man! I'm almost done with my CIS program which has done all sorts of computer stuff. Because of that I have a job I like that has a steady schedule! I help people with their computer problems. Those exams are tough from what I've heard. I've had help with some people on here, I don't see myself as a developer, but like you, I like networking, and the job I have now has growth for me eventually make my way there.
With cisco you must mean the CCNA? From what I've been told certs go in and out, sometimes employers want certs more than education, sometimes it's the opposite. I've heard the A+ cert is probably the most all around good one to have. There are better, but A+ will for sure get you noticed.

I am happy for you that you are succeeding! Keep going! The professions in technology will never bore Always something new on the horizon! cheers, Triz
