I ran this a few times then let my subscription lapse 'cause it really wasn't all that much fun. I got an email today wanting me to re-join (surprise) and they've dropped their prices and have some impressive connections in the racing community. Can anyone tell me if you're running in this and what's it like now?

If im honest, I think that iracing is the closest to real racing that sims have got and sims will be for a while, I know that the costs are huuuuge... but, the cost get people driving so you get full grids across the classes all the time... I like the idea, and if I ever have the funds to play iracing, I wont have to think twice (esspecially as I am getting a G25 for Xmas (it is still IMO the wheel of choice)).
Oscar.

I'd just get NR2003, since it's basically the same physics. I tried iRacing awhile back and it felt exactly like NR2003 to me....just with a few better looking models for cars and tracks, since they were laser scanned. Same crappy physics as NR2003 though.

IMO the main problem with iRacing is something most people only realize once they are in. And that's the ladder system. You cannot just join and run what cars or tracks are available. You can only run what cars and tracks the system allows you to run. No matter if you have already paid for additional content or not - and you have to pay for any additional content. Which means at starting you have to run cars and tracks that you might not even want to run at all, just to get up that ladder to be allowed to run better cars. Much like in real life racing for sure ;D
Plus you cannot run races with those people you WANT to run races with, but the system puts you in races with people of your skill level. No way to get around this. Even more like real life racing ;D
iRacing IS closest to real life racing, yeah - but just because they have added all the annoying and frustrating parts that are part of real life racing as well. All the rest is no better than what you can get elsewhere as well. And honestly: who could tell the difference from a laser-scanned track to some scratch made ? Unless you are racing the real track in real life, the difference is insofar nonexistent, as it doesn't make any difference to the driver. If you cannot compare to the real thing, what's the fuzz ? There's some great tracks out there that don't even have a real life counterpart. All LFS tracks, to start with. Doesn't make them any less great tracks
I don't care a heck about how real iRacing claims to be. There's a line when "real" just adds more potentially frustrating and annoying situations and takes away fun. Stranded in sand with no way out ? Real fun. Your engine blows without your doing ? More fun, I guess.
There's fine line of balance between "realism" and what is fun in simracing. Console racing games for example are almost all JUST on the fun side. IRacing approaches that balance line from the other side... after they noticed how few customers where staying, they started to soften their "hardcore realism" claim already. And they even don't ever had all features that would make that claim any true
If you're running the right mods and the right tracks in the right leagues you can get even more realism in rF. But with far less bigmouth advertising and less money to pay - as THAT's the part iRacing is really good in
