Hey guys I'm thinking of upgrading my team to a .com URL but not sure where to go for hosting etc.. I don't want to get scammed and a mate of mine said that if you do it yourself you can pay as little as 20 dollars a year? I was just wondering about this. I don't know anything about web hosting or designing/ editing a site so I may sign up for a site like hostgator.com to get a package with editing tools etc... any thoughts on this.. it has cpanel and easy design. Other places that offer good deals is welcomes aswell.

Other places that offer good deals is welcomes aswell. You can even go as low and only pay 10 EUR a year ;D 1.) .com usually is more expensive than for example .net, .org, or alike. I wouldn't go for .com without need, especially not for a non-commercial site 2.) how much webspace do you think you'll need to have ? That has big impact on cost. Some max 100 MB site is available for 10 EUR/Year already, while for example 10 GB would cost about 40 EUR/Month 3.) how much traffic bandwidth do you think you'll need ? In case you plan to host popular binary stuff like videos, pictures, mods, songs,... you better go for unlimited bandwidth 4.) you need scripting like ASP (erks...) or better PHP ? How about database support ? Check if it's in the hosting package. Same about emails 5.) if you put up a site, always first check it's performance... sites that are designed the easy way by using high level tools quite often have a lot of graphical stuff - and crap bandwidth. You don't want your visitors get bored while waiting for your site to load, right ? Hint: keep graphics load low, avoid using Flash and only littel JaveScript and the likes. Don't ever use ActiveX 6.) IMPORTANT: choose wisely WHERE to be hosted - or what stuff you put up your site. In EU and US there's laws about "intellectual rights infringements"... you might already get sued for only showing a brand logo without having asked the "owner" for permission. And its pretty easy to find out who's site owner. Even for lawyers.... there's quite some leech lawyers living on suing people for alleged "intellectual rights infringements" 7.) Get some html basic knowledge

Well it's for my team so I'm not sure about memory.. I was thinking about buying a Wordpress domain name for 15 USD and it can be a .com. But custom CSS is another 25.. I found a default theme thats pretty good though and looks rather professional. lastlapmotorsports.wordpress.com/ - getting abanner made .. also anyone who wants free advertisement can just PM me here. I have a couple links added just as tests and will remove them if requested. I'm also looking at a co.cc and am gonna see if u can buy a domain from them as they're sites seem pretty good. ( lightning-servers.co.cc/ ) This company hosts my LFS server and they use it .. loads pretty fast but just need to see how hard it is to edit and stuff. I do have a member on my team who does this for a living so we'll see.. I have used wordpress on my PPD site and I am very familiar and confident in it so i don't think this would be a bad buy.
